I am Rick James, or, What do YOU want to know about Audiobooks?
Tomorrow I have the honor of going to Newark, New Jersey (wait for it, the honor is in the second part of the sentence) to attend the recording of the audiobook of Shift, the sequel to Shade. I'll get to meet my audiobook editor at Audible/Brilliance, as well as the actress who'll be narrating it.If you haven't heard the lovely audio version of Shade, here are links where you can buy it in either a download or a CD version. Kristine Hvam's narration is amazing--she made me cry. Then again, beer commercials have been known to make me cry.
Anyway, during the recording, I'll sit in the sound booth with the engineer, whom I can pepper with questions like, "How long does it take to record a novel?" and "What happens if I press this button?" and "Are you going to eat all those fries?"
I'll ask him or her your questions, too! What have you always wanted to know about audiobooks and how they're made? I'll report back on Friday (or more likely, Monday) with the fascinating answers.
Until then, I'll leave you with this twisted vision my agent Ginger Clark had, of me sitting in the sound booth while the actress records, just like Rick James did with Eddie Murphy in this timeless classic shown below.
WARNING: EARWORM ALERT. I had to listen to ten or more hours of other music before I could get this song out of my head. But it's worth it, if only for the sweaters.
Labels: music, SHADE series

How much control does the narrator have over the session? Who makes the final call between "that's a keeper" or "we need to do that again"? Can't wait to hear how it goes.
