As you probably know by now, YA Sisterhood is holding their second Tournament of Crushes this month and next. Zachary did quite well last week thanks to you! (See this post for giveaway winners, updates on incentives, and a Round 2 pep talk.)
Beginning tonight at midnight Eastern Right now, one of my dearest friends and readers, Juli from The Reviews News, is advocating for the witty, gorgeous, and surprisingly resourceful Finnick Odair from The Hunger Games series. (If you've only seen the movie and are wondering who the heck Finnick is, he comes onto the scene in Catching Fire. He's the winner of a previous Hunger Game, and that's all I'll say to avoid spoilers.)
Juli is not only a friend and SHADE reader, she's one of the admins on the fabulous SHADE fan site, KiltandKeeley.com. She's always quick to support Team Kilt with an animated gif, or a gorgeous piece of graphic art, or even a song, like this version of Logan's song "Forever" she wrote last year:
Juli's pretty much a genius, yeah. But it's her heart that has made her one of my favorite peeps.
So there was no question that I would support Juli and Finnick in the tournament. And as you can tell from the subject line, I'm giving away something really special.
An Advance Review Copy of Book One, The Hunger Games.
No kidding. There are two on sale on eBay right now, each for about $300.
***If Finnick wins Round One, I will give away this ARC to a randomly drawn commenter on this post. If Finnick loses, I'll keep it for myself to cherish and possibly finance a short Caribbean cruise with someday after all the movies are out.***
The ARC is in very good to excellent condition. And it's a really good book! :-D
1. A Hunger Games pendant, generously donated by Karen at For What It's Worth (another fab K&K'er). Pictured here:
Oooh....aahhhh...
2. A hardcover copy of Cassandra Clare's Clockwork Prince, on account of the totally sweet, totally crushworthy Jem Carstairs also being in Friday's tournament matchups. Jem is represented by Page Turners Blog, one of whose members, Stacey Canova, is another fond friend of mine and member of Team Kilt.
3. A copy of Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins, which features Finnick's opponent, Kaiden, who I hear is VERY special.
RULES:
To enter, just leave a comment on this blog telling me your favorite part(s) of The Hunger Games, either the books or the movie. Or tell me what you thought of the movie compared to the book. Jog my memory, which is so terrible for details!
Deadline: 11:59am ET Saturday, July 14. Yeah, I'm giving you 12 extra hours to enter after voting is over, cuz I love ya. (Not that limiting the entry time to midnight would mean I DIDN'T love you.)
International entries welcome!
I will post the winners in the comments and on this blog on Monday. If you won, you MUST respond within two days or I'll draw another winner. Please don't leave your email address in your comment, because that results in spam, but I encourage you to leave your Twitter or Facebook name so that I have a way to get in touch with you.
EDITED TO ADD INCENTIVE: When Finnick hits 2,000 votes, I will donate $25 to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, a charity that supports this vital habitat, the country's largest estuary (and rather dear to me, since I live close by, and since my granddad eked out a living on it as a fisherman).
If Finnick gets 2500 votes, I'll donate another $25 for a total of $50. Team Fish Boy ahoy!
My favorite part of The Hunger Games was the reaping scene and that's probably the best part of the movie too (I think they left out some important stuff that would have been easy to have in the movie like when she receives the gift from District 11.)
I really do like Finnick too so of course I was disappointed in the 3rd book.
Thanks for the chance to win some awesome prizes. :)
AH! This is Amazing <3 Fave part of THG book: When Katniss and Peeta stand up to the capitol...suicide-berries style. Love it. Thank you for this giveaway! :D Twitter: @saavedra012
Oh! Team Finnick! Awesome. My favourite part of The Hunger Games would have to be when Katniss drugs Peeta to save his leg. I mostly love it because the audience is on her side and sends her the drugs! Though, it was hard to pick a part, since the series is flawless (not unlike your own)
I would comment on this post even if you weren't giving away an ARC of THG, just so I could talk about THG some more. :) But my favorite scene in the book is after Rue dies...how her district reacts, despite any repercussions they might face. If I hadn't already been sobbing for Rue at that point, I would have started then.
This is the best giveaway EVAR, but you already know that. ;0)
Um WOW! I was planning on voting for Finnick since he's one of my favourite characters in THG but this definitely helps the incentive. I think one of my favourite moments is I guess a tad spoiler-y but how Finnick and Annie hold hands constantly after their marriage. I'm so in love with them as a couple even if we don't know much about Annie. Prince & princess of the sea! Twitter: novelsounds. :) Thanks for such a fantastic giveaway.
What's my favorite part of the Hunger Games? Do you mean the series or just the first book? If it's the series, than anything and everything involving Finnick. I was planning on voting for him anyway since he is my FAVORITE character from this series. However, if you mean just the Hunger Games than I think I will choose...I guess the berry scene. There's too many to really narrow it down. Comparing the book to film, it did a pretty good job. I was disappointed with some things they left out that I felt were important...but it was one of the better book to film movies I've seen :)
Wow okay you are pretty awesome. Not only do have you written som really good books but now you're giving awesome stuff. I LOVE FINNICK! I think finnick kinda lightened the mood in the books ( until*spoiler* he died... D:) Wow okay thats a bard question. There were so many good parts. Here ill put some of my favorite parts: When Finnick was in his hospital gown and Katniss is just like. " Put some pants on!" and finnick says, " Why? Do you find this distracting?" (XD) Or: when Katniss is out filming propos and she says," If we burn, you burn with us" Or: when Katniss was turned into the girl on fire by Cinna( that whole littke part with the interview and the chariots)
Im horrible and choosing just one part I like in books. ( like in your books I have so many parts I like I really cant choose) Thanks for this amazing giveaway! ~Alessia
You got one?! Thank you so much! Oh, the things you do for TeamKilt members :D I personally thought the book to movie adaption was very smooth, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. My favorite scene is from the book when Cinna refuses to allow the Capitol to change Katniss’ body shape.
I was planning in voting for Finnick anyway, he's amazing! Can't wait till they announce who's gonna play him in the movie.
Gosh, I have so many favorites scenes in Hunger Games, it's hard choosing only one, but here it goes: I absolutely loved the cave scene. There was action and fear and romance and paranoia... Suzanne rocked it!
Having read the books and then viewed the movie with people who did not read the books, I think that the movie presumed that you read the books and left out some things that left non-readers confused For example, my non-reader friends didn't understand why Katniss was saluting with her fingers, my Eagle Scout husband snickered and thought she was a boy scout. Another would be the full back story behind MockingJays or TrackerJackers.
My favorite part of the book was the cave scenes. This is the turning point in their relationship and so much was revealed about both Katniss and Peeta. My favorite part of the movie was the tour around the capitol in their costumes. I loved seeing how that turned out on screen!
Thank you for the chance to win cool prizes! Twitter: @BreatheInBooKs
My favourite part of The Hunger Games is probably in the movie.
***SPOILERS*** I love it at the end when Seneca Crane is locked in a room with Nightlock! Maybe that's morbid, but the way it's portrayed in the movie is actually quite funny. And I like how we actually get information on his execution in the movie, since we don't in the book.
I really liked the movie because it was so close to the book, something other people fail to do.
As for my favorite part in the books...I don't have one. You've read the books, right? So you understand why I can't pick a favorite. However, I can pick a favorite part about the books: The Hunger Games High. Totally safe (well, maybe) and 100% drug-free, it's the feeling a reader gets after reading the books. The last time I read the books I did so back to back to back. When I was done I just had this feeling and it was AWESOME. I was hungry for more, more, more, and I was mad at myself for not reading them closer to the movie's release so that I could satiate that hunger. I LOVE The Hunger Games High, especially since I don't get it from a lot of books. Therefore, it's one of my favorite parts of The Hunger Games series.
Thanks for the giveaway! (I can't believe you're giving away your Hunger Games ARC! That's so nice!)
I loved the whole series. The first 2 books were the best, but Mockingjay was still pretty great. Finnick is probably my favorite character.
I didn't like it in the movie when they cut out Madge, the mayor's daughter. She wasn't a huge character in the book, but I felt that her role was too big to just cut out like that.
I plan on voting for Finnick! My favorite part of the Hunger Games book was the cave scene, which was okay in the movie but I saw it as a more intimate scene. haha :)
One of my favorite HG moments is when Finnick has no pants on and...well, why dont I just give you the quote?
"“Finnick?" I say, "Maybe some pants?" He looks down at his legs as if noticing his outfit for the first time. Then he whips off his hospital gown leaving him in just his underwear. "Why? Do you find this" -- he strikes a ridiculously provocative pose -- "distracting?"" ~Mockingjay (have no idea what pg)
Annnd I think you know who I am going to be voting for. ;) Thanks for the super amazing giveaway!!
Hmm... I don't know if I can choose a favorite part of the Hunger Games! I guess if I have to choose, the cave scene. And anything with Finnick. Thanks for being incredibly amazing!
Well, I loved the book and enjoyed the movie, but it wasn't what I expected. I didn't like/agree on a few things in the movie, but Gale made everything easier on the eyes... LOL.
My favorite part of the movie was the epic fight scene between Katniss x Peeta X Cato. I loved how Alexander Ludwig acted insane so perfectly. (And gosh he's so hot.)
I was a bit disappointed with the ending of the film though. Katniss' parting with Peeta was more painful in the book than in the movie.
Also, I really imagined District 12 to be more filthy and rundown....
I have only read THG not the other books so I don't know Finnick :( But my favorite scene in the book is after Rue dies, it was very touching what her district did for Katniss. And I didn't see that one coming!!
P.S: I <3 you. I can't believe you are giving your ARC! :O You're awesome. :) And Karen too.
The movie was one of my favorite book-to-movie adaptations ever. I thought it was surprisingly well done. I felt like there was a lot of attention to the small details that readers would find important.
Favorite part of the movie? Effie saying "That is mahogany!" when Katniss stabbed the table. Also, seriously, I had NO IDEA that was Elizabeth Banks. Genius make up artists.
Favorite part of the book? I'm sticking with just Hunger Games so as to avoid movie-watching-only spoilers. I'm going to go with any part that Rue was involved in. I loved that she was still such a kid. Katniss was young, but had been forced to grow up due to circumstances. Rue still had such a kid-like quality. She was really intelligent, but also maintained her innocence. I also loved Amandla Stenberg in the movie. She was adorable. :)
My Favorite scene from THG movie is when Katniss bumped into Foxface.Although, it is not stated in the book, this scene shows that Foxface still have that humanity inside of her, unlike the careers, who are described as 'killing machines'.
When we see Foxface's expression after bumping into Katniss we can interpret Fear, Panic, Confused and obviously, trying to save her own live. This tells us that Foxface might be in the same situation as Katniss, hopeless.
Maybe her background, is also similar and she is trying to show the audience her strength by being 'sly and elusive'.
I really hope Finnick wins, because he is such a charming, smart and strong character!
Thank you so much for making this contest available for international readers :D You are the best!!
My favorite part of The Hunger Games (well, of Mockingjay) was Finnick and Annie's wedding. It was such a genuine and sweet moment for Finnick. I cried so hard.
My favorite part of the series as a whole would probably have to be Finnick and Annie's reunion in Mockingjay... Really, any scene with Finnick, though :)
My favourite part of the entire series is when we get to hear that Katniss says "Real". I know it wasn't an entire story of how Katniss and Peeta got back together but that sweet moment was satisfying enough for me :) I'm really looking forward to that in the movie but also some of the more intense scenes, which I know the actors will be able to pull off, like Peeta's hijacking, Finnick's death, the beach scene! I could go on and on! Thanks for the giveaway, you're awesome! <3
My favorite part in the book was when she destroyed the other kids' food supply. That was the first time in the book that Katniss announces that she will fight back. We the readers knew she would fight back but in that scene she tells the whole world "don't mess with me". Also the movie was awesome. everybody who helped make that movie was awesome.
My favorite part of The Hunger Games... There are a great many of them, so picking just one is hard to narrow down. I think it would have to be the part where District 11 banded together to buy Katniss a single piece of bread after her tribute to Rue. In the book, it was written so poignantly, I got chills realizing what those people were giving up just to say, "You showed our little girl respect, and that's important. We're going to defy everything, and do the same for you." Even now, I think about it, and I get chills. And a little teary, I won't lie. That scene always gets me. It was one of the deal breakers for me with the movie, and thankfully they handled it well.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling (or soap boxing, whichever I'm actually doing... LOL). Thanks so much for this! Here's hoping I get it, but if I don't, here's hoping Finnick wins! Looking forward to Zach's next go on the 25th.
My favorite part would have to be when Peeta gets picked in the reaping and then reading Katniss's reactions to that. Right after that you know things are going to be even more difficult.
So many awesome parts to this whole series...may be best to talk about the book vs. movie instead.
I liked the book more than the movie, even though I agree that the film adaptation was one of the best I've seen. The movie does leave out a lot of backstory, and I don't think you connect with the characters so that you're emotionally where they are in each scene. For example, when she places the flowers around Rue, there's no explanation for why just that it's a tribute of sorts. Also at the end when they're returning on the train. For me there wasn't the same sense of tension/angst between Peeta & Katniss.
As for what the movie has better than the book? First, movie Gale is WAYYYY hotter than I imagined book Gale to be. Second, Seneca Crane's beard is totally awesome. So awesome in fact, it has it's own FB page. ;)
Thanks for the fantastic giveaway! You rock, as always!
I voted for Finnick and Jem! That's nice of you to promote other characters. I didn't go and see The Hunger Games movie. I was one of those people that read the entire Hunger Games trilogy before the hype, and before half the world read the books. I knew that the movie wouldn't be anywhere close to the book, and in my opinion, I was right. So I didn't see the movie for that reason.
But, my favorite scene of the entire trilogy was in the first book, when Katniss is trying to halp Peeta's leg, and it has pus in it, and she's totally grossed out, and Peeta's like you're totally badass, yet you can't drain a wound!? lol. Especially since her mom and sister do that sort of thing all the time.
So yeah. Thank you!!!
Alyssa Susanna (No twitter account, but ALYSSA SUSANNA is my Facebook name)
have to say u have out done yourself with this giveaway that is a very special item!!!! thanks so much for loving your fans!! well Im not sure if this counts but I can not chose a favorite part of the hunger games there were so many....so ill say instead katniss and her love for her sister to offer herself in place of her sister that is epic!! @jware29
THANK YOU so much for the giveaway, Jeri! You rock! <3 Even without this super amazing giveaway, I'd still comment on this post simply because I LOVE Finnick!! He might be my favorite book crush ever hehe! x)
My favorite part of Hunger Games is when Katniss takes care of dying Peeta in book 1. I think that's the most sacred moment between them! <3 I love the part when Peeta gives a pearl to Katniss in book 2 too! So romantic. x) And Finnick and Annie's wedding! I was a mess when I read the ending of the final book. :')
Thanks so much for the giveaway, Jeri! Of course I'm voting for Finnick! He's my favorite character in the whole Hunger Games series! :D
There are so many different things I loved about The Hunger Games, it's hard to just pick one! But my favorite part has to be during the Reaping when all of District Twelve does the salute. I get chills and tears every time I read it. And I loved how they did it in the movie! No music, just silence and the salute. Very well done.
The Cornucopia was always the best, both in the movie and the book!! :)
But I can't help but "judge" movie-Katniss's bow skills. My friend is a legit archer and she told me a bunch of stuff about it and I got kinda turned off about it in the movie 'cuz she wasn't holding the bow right and all. LOL Just a thought.
Thanks so much for this!! I've always been Team Finnick, I mean seriously? Compared to Baker Boy and The-Other-Hot-Guy-Who-Isn't-As-Hot-As-Finnick, Finnick's the best! Especially how much he loves Annie! *SWOON* Is he sexy or what?!
I like Finnick but I've also read Sweet Evil so I can see the Kaidan appeal.
My favourite bit of The Hunger Games is probably the very emotional part when Rue dies. I sobbed for ages when I read it. Seriously! How could it not pull at your heartstrings???
My favorite part was the ending of Mockingjay (hopefully you meant the whole series not just book 1). I know a lot of people weren't overly pleased with the ending because is not exactly happily ever after. However, I thought it was a great, real ending. All things considered it's about as happy as could be expected. Thanks for the giveaway! This an amazing prize and Finnick is awesome!
I have only read THG, I think my favorite part was when they entered the Arena for the first time because each one of them has to decide what their priorities are. Choose between arms or a way to survival.
Gosh, I don't think I could name just one favorite thing from the books. So I'll stick with the movie, I loved it over all (have seen it 3 times and planning on watching it over and over again once it hits dvd) though there are a few things I didn't care for one person I still miss that wasn't in the movie was Madge, she was one of my favorite not main characters (female that is, Finnick is still the best.) and it was sad not to be able to see her on the big screen :(
I have lots and lots of scenes I love :) but I think I'll chose the cave scene as my fave because I love first kisses! It's so sweet when Peeta talks about what he remembers about Katniss when they were little <3 thank you SO much for the giveaway! Twitter @v97_
Favourite part of the Hunger Games: When Thresh saves Katniss at the Cornucopia, and Katniss talks about returning debts. Between the movie and the book, the ending of the movie didn't talk about Peeta's leg and its fate, which bothered me a little as it adds to the future books. Thanks for hosting such an awesome giveaway! Twitter: @AlikiyaKC
The Hunger games is one of my favorite series of all time. Suzanne Collins wrote an excellent story and didn't hold anything back. My favorite parts of the Hunger Games are 99% Katniss and Peeta (Cave scene, nights on the train, rooftop picnic, Peeta's "token"). But I loved Finnick'c character also, especially (SPOILERS!!!!) his and Annie's wedding where everyone was able to celebrate and have hope again during a horrific war.
Thank you Jeri for your awesome contests, awesome prizes, awesome books, and general awesomeness!!!
I have to say I liked the movie, but I still like the books better. What I didn't like about the movie was how they left out when Rue's district sent bread to Katniss and the fact that Peeta didn't lose his leg. I thought both of those things were kind of important in the book, so I guess I just felt like they should have been included. I don't think I can pick any part as my favorite because I love so many different parts. I do really like all the scenes with Peeta and Katniss together and vulnerable, though. You always have the best giveaways!! thanks for this, of course awesome, one : )
My favorite part of THG is the love that Peeta constantly shows for Katniss. He protects her when she doesn't even realize it! Thank you for the awesome giveaway! @TabithaMichelle
Team Finnick!!! My favorite part of THG trilogy is when Katniss is in the basement of the weird tiger looking guy and she kisses Peeta and tells him -Don’t let him take you from me.
Even though I said I won't enter, my brother really wants to, so please count this entry for him!
Okay, so he says that his favorite part of THE HUNGER GAMES is the battles. Figures. He also haven't read CATCHING FIRE and MOCKINGJAY yet so he actually doesn't know Finnick, but I made him vote for him anyway! :D
And you know where to contact me. :) @JustJuliHelms
My favourite part of the Hunger Games was the flower scene when Rue is dying. That scene is just so beautiful! Except for the fact that Rue died of course..
Ahh! Wow, amazing giveaway! And since I haven't "met" Kaidan yet, then I'm definitely Team Finnick! And I absolutely loved THG movie! The fighting scenes were pretty good, and I kinda liked the wacky fashion in the Capitol! :D But the part where Rue dies was pretty good- in a sad way, of course.
Omg. Awesome giveaway! I LOVE THG. I am so excited to find out who they are casting for Finnick! Eep! I really liked the movie, but i felt like they cut out a lot of my favorite scenes. sadly. or changed them anyway. i know this happens, but I was still sad!
My favourite part of The Hunger Games is the scene on the cave with Peeta and Katniss where they finally kiss and also on the train in Catching Fire where they tell each other about their nightmares.
I have too many favourite scenes in The Hunger Games book but I especiallly love the scenes between Katniss and Peeta in the cave. That's when we really get to see them bond and it's just so sweet!
My favourite scene in the film though is the reaping scene, it's so heartbreaking! Kudos to Jennifer Lawrence for being totally amazing in that scene.
*SPOILERS* I loved that scene in Mockingjay where Katiniss is supposed to kill Snow and what she does instead! I thought that showed just how defiant she is!
ps.: I love your books and I miss Aura and Zachary already!
My favorite part of the has to be the tracker jacker nest being thrown at the Careers. That or - when Rue, in the movie the cut away from Cato have a spastic moment about his knife in the training room, to the ceiling where Rue is perched.
I like a lot of the little things that tell you the most about characters, both in the book and the movie.
My favorite part of the Hunger games was when Katniss tell us about her father's book at the end of Mockingjay. I cried like a crazy during that scene!! I love love love Finnik and I voted for him. (even though I had to say that I voted for Kaidan for the DI) lol! :)
My favorite part in the movie was when Katniss volunteered as a tribute in exchange for Prim. I felt exactly the same when I was reading that part in the book and the character who portrayed Prim is very good that I felt really heartbroken when she was dragged away from Katniss screaming.
Thanks to everyone who commented and helped get Juli and Finnick the win! I had no idea so many people loved that guy as much as I do.

I was a bit disappointed with the ending of the film though. Katniss' parting with Peeta was more painful in the book than in the movie.
Also, I really imagined District 12 to be more filthy and rundown....
Ah. There's just so much to say! XD Hahaha

My favorite part of the books is Mockingjay: real or not real? Ever scene with that sentence gutted me SO HARD when I read it.

Anyway, I'll stop rambling (or soap boxing, whichever I'm actually doing... LOL). Thanks so much for this! Here's hoping I get it, but if I don't, here's hoping Finnick wins! Looking forward to Zach's next go on the 25th.
Go Team Kilt!!!

You rock, as always!

see the movie for that reason.

Team Finnick forever! x)

There are so many different things I loved about The Hunger Games, it's hard to just pick one! But my favorite part has to be during the Reaping when all of District Twelve does the salute. I get chills and tears every time I read it. And I loved how they did it in the movie! No music, just silence and the salute. Very well done.
Happy Friday the 13th!

My favourite bit of The Hunger Games is probably the very emotional part when Rue dies. I sobbed for ages when I read it. Seriously! How could it not pull at your heartstrings???

Between the movie and the book, the ending of the movie didn't talk about Peeta's leg and its fate, which bothered me a little as it adds to the future books.
Thanks for hosting such an awesome giveaway!

I thought that showed just how defiant she is!
